GD or a case?

A GD (General Diary) records an incident in the police station’s diary to inform the police. A case (FIR) formally starts criminal proceedings.

GDFile a GD when

  • an NID, passport, certificate, phone or anything else is lost
  • you are being threatened or harassed and want it on record
  • you want to put a scam on record with the police straight away

CaseFile a case when

  • money was taken by cheating (Penal Code section 420) and you want justice and your money back
  • there was online blackmail, hacking or an unauthorised transaction — the Cyber Security Ordinance 2025 applies
  • the police tell you your online complaint qualifies as a case

For scam victims a GD is a good first step: it creates an official, dated record that helps later with a case and with complaints to your bank or mobile banking provider.

What you need

  • Your National ID (NID) number and date of birth
  • An Android phone with a SIM (for the app), or a device with a camera
  • A working mobile number to receive the OTP
  • The date, time, place and details of the incident
  • Evidence: screenshots, receipts, links (see the list below)
  • About 15 minutes

Online GD, step by step

  1. Get the app or open the website. Install Bangladesh Police’s “Online GD” app from Google Play, or open gd.police.gov.bd in a browser.
  2. Register once. Enter your National ID (NID) number and date of birth, take a live photo with the phone camera for identity checks, confirm your mobile number with the OTP and set a password. You only register once.
  3. Choose the GD type. Log in and start a new GD. Pick what applies — a lost item or document, something found, or another matter.
  4. Choose the district and police station. Select the district and police station where it happened or where you live.
  5. Describe what happened. Give the date, time and place, your current address and a full description. You can use the sample text below.
  6. Attach your evidence. Attach screenshots, payment receipts or any other relevant documents.
  7. Check and submit. Review everything — fix mistakes with “Edit”, then press “Submit”.
  8. Get your GD copy and track it. If accepted as a GD, you receive a digital copy with the GD number and the investigating officer’s details. Log in later to see its status.

Sample GD text for a scam

Copy this into the GD’s description field and replace each [ ] with your details. Write only what really happened.

I am [your name], father/husband: [name], address: [current address], mobile: [your number].

On [date] at [time] I sent [amount] taka to the [bKash/Nagad/Rocket/bank] number [recipient number] given by the Facebook page/website "[page or site name]" ([link]) to buy [product/service] (transaction ID: [TrxID]).

After receiving the money they did not deliver, stopped replying and blocked me. I have been cheated. Screenshots of the chat, the page link and the payment are attached as evidence.

I request that this be recorded as a General Diary and that the necessary legal action be taken.

Evidence to keep

✓ Save

  • Screenshots of the whole chat — with dates and times
  • The page/profile/website link (URL) and a screenshot of it
  • The payment message, transaction ID and the recipient number
  • The other person’s phone numbers, call log and the ad you saw

✕ Don’t

  • Delete chats or messages
  • Pay again, or share an OTP, with anyone promising a refund
  • Edit or crop screenshots so details are missing
  • Threaten the other person — they may delete the evidence

Common questions

Does an online GD cost money?
No. There is no government fee for a GD — online or at the police station. If anyone asks for money, report it in writing to a senior police officer.
What kind of GD can be filed online?
At first only lost-and-found GDs were online. Following the Police Headquarters announcement, all types of GD can be filed online at every police station since September 2025.
Is a GD enough for a scam?
Cheating (section 420 of the Penal Code) is a criminal offence, so getting justice usually needs a case (FIR) at the police station. A GD is a first record of what happened. If an online complaint qualifies as a case, you will be asked to go to the police station with the printed copy or the complaint code.
I have no smartphone or NID — what can I do?
Online registration needs an NID and a live photo. Without them, file the GD in person at your nearest police station — that is free too.
Who do I call if registration or filing fails?
Call the Online GD hotline 01320-001428.
What if the police do nothing after the GD?
Stay in touch with the investigating officer using your GD number; if needed, write to the station’s Officer-in-Charge or the Superintendent of Police. You can also file a complaint directly in court — for free legal advice call the government legal aid helpline 16430.
